What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a titanium screw that is inserted into the jaw to replace a missing tooth’s roots. Titanium is a material that has a unique ability to fuse with the bone in a process known as “osseointegration.” It is used around the body for a variety of surgical needs, making it an excellent alternative to natural teeth and providing equal stability.

As more and more people realize the exceptional benefits dental implants bring to their lives, they are rapidly becoming the standard response to missing teeth.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Last a lifetime
  • Do not restrict eating
  • Look exactly like natural teeth

Dental Implants Procedure

  • The first step in the dental implant process is to examine and perform imaging to determine whether there is enough bone to support the implant.
  • If there is not enough bone present, then a bone grafting procedure is performed. The process involves introducing a grafting material into the socket, where it is left for several months to encourage the growth of new bone.
  • Once the jawbone is rehabilitated, we perform dental implant surgery right here in our office. During the surgery, which takes about an hour for a single tooth, the titanium screw is inserted into the jawbone and covered with soft tissue. It is then left to heal for several months while osseointegration occurs.
  • After the bone has fused with the titanium implant, a connecting piece (“abutment”) is attached to the implant.
  • You can then visit your dentist to have your final restoration crafted and attached.

Beyond Dentures: Eliminating Bone Loss and Hassle

Bone loss is one of the most serious side effects of missing teeth. The jawbone requires regular stimulation through biting and chewing to maintain its size. When a tooth is lost, the bone starts to resorb almost immediately. Dentures and bridges do not offset this side effect, as they provide no stimulation to the underlying bone. In addition, dentures can cause social embarrassment (slipping and shifting).

Dental implants, by contrast, eliminate these problems as they look and function just like natural teeth do.
