Instructions Before Anesthesia

Important pre-operative instructions for patients undergoing IV sedation or general anesthesia

IMPORTANT: Please Read Before Your Surgery

If you have been scheduled for a procedure under general anesthesia or IV sedation, please follow these instructions carefully. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the cancellation of your procedure.

Eating and Drinking

Please do not eat or drink anything (including water) for 8 hours prior to your appointment. This is very important for your safety. If you have eaten or had anything to drink within 8 hours of your appointment, your surgery will be postponed.

If you are a diabetic patient, please contact our office for specific instructions regarding your diet and medications prior to surgery.

Medications

If you take routine medications, please check with our office prior to your surgical date for instructions. Most medications can be taken with a small sip of water.

If you take blood thinners or medications that affect bleeding, please inform our office prior to your procedure. You may need to temporarily stop these medications before surgery.

Transportation

A responsible adult must accompany you to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive you home. You will not be permitted to drive or operate machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia. Please arrange for a responsible adult to stay with you for the remainder of the day following your surgery.

What to Wear

Wear loose fitting clothing with short sleeves or sleeves that can be rolled up past the elbow
Do not wear contact lenses
Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish
Do not wear jewelry
Do not wear dentures or partial dentures
