Nerve Repositioning

A specialized procedure to allow dental implant placement in the lower jaw

Nerve repositioning is a procedure that is sometimes necessary to allow for the placement of dental implants in the lower jaw. It involves moving the inferior alveolar nerve, which provides sensation to the lower lip and chin, to create more space for the implants.

Why Is Nerve Repositioning Needed?

The inferior alveolar nerve runs through the lower jaw and provides sensation to the lower lip, chin, and teeth. When there is significant bone loss in the lower jaw, the nerve can be positioned very close to the surface of the bone, making it difficult to place dental implants without risking damage to the nerve.

In these cases, nerve repositioning may be necessary to move the nerve out of the way so that dental implants can be placed safely. This procedure is typically recommended for patients who have experienced significant bone loss in the lower jaw and want to get dental implants.

How Is Nerve Repositioning Performed?

Nerve repositioning is a complex surgical procedure that is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Dr. Butura will make an incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone and the nerve. The nerve is then carefully moved to a new position, and the dental implants are placed. The nerve is then repositioned back to its original location, or a new position that allows for the implants to be placed safely.

After the procedure, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated area. You may also experience temporary numbness or altered sensation in the lower lip and chin, which is a normal side effect of the procedure. In most cases, normal sensation returns within a few weeks to months as the nerve heals.

Important Considerations

Nerve repositioning is a complex procedure that carries some risks, including the possibility of permanent nerve damage. However, in the hands of an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon like Dr. Butura, the risks are minimized. Dr. Butura will discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure with you during your consultation to help you make an informed decision.
